When the Air Sticks and the Current Gathers

Expo Chicago with Mindy Solomon Gallery

April 24 - April 27, 2025

Mindy Solomon is pleased to present the painterly figurative works of Miami-based artist Zoe Schweiger. In this presentation, we will focus on her narrative works that explore her interest in global warming and its significance to her interpersonal relationships.

Schweiger states: “I intend to create a series of paintings that highlight queer relationships within the context of the Anthropocene—specifically painting my friends and loved ones. I will explore these intimacies while using a quickness in my brushstrokes that reflects the intensity of the climate crisis. Growing up in Miami, I have witnessed firsthand the effects of sea level rise and warming temperatures. These portraits will capture the essence of my relationships, while distorting and blurring their bodies by painting in a textural and fluid manner, as if they have been caught in a flood or warped by an encompassing humidity. My paintings feature a warm color palette reminiscent of algae blooms, sunsets, and wildfires—serving as an alarm for the plight of global warming and the embodied climate anxiety resulting from these wild fluctuations. By painting this series, I aim to document my queer experience within an increasingly warming and uncertain environment.”
